Contraindications & suitability.
This screening guide identifies common reasons to defer or seek assessment. It is not an exhaustive list for every product, device or health condition.
Do not proceed until assessed
- Active infection or cold sores, open wounds, sunburn or significant irritation in the area.
- Known allergy to a peel ingredient.
- An unexplained or changing lesion needing medical assessment.
Tell Nicolle before booking
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: suitability depends on the ingredients and type of peel.
- Current or recent isotretinoin, retinoids, exfoliating products and recent skin procedures.
- Frequent cold sores, keloid tendency or previous pigment changes.
- Diabetes, impaired healing, immune suppression or cancer treatment.
- Your skin condition, medication list and ability to follow recovery and sun-protection instructions.
Do not stop prescribed medicines to make yourself eligible for treatment. Medical clearance may be required.
Preparing for your appointment
- Follow your individual skincare preparation plan. Confirm whether non-prescription retinol or exfoliating products need to be paused, and for how long.
- Protect your skin from the sun and avoid tanning before treatment.
- Allow 45 minutes for your appointment. Plan around the recovery advice given for your selected peel and any upcoming events.
What happens during treatment
- We assess your skin, discuss suitability and the proposed peel, explain risks and obtain consent.
- Your skin is prepared and the selected peel is applied and managed according to its instructions. Let Nicolle know about discomfort immediately.
- You receive a recovery and aftercare plan specific to your peel. We discuss when you can resume your usual activities and products.
What to expect afterwards
- Redness, sensitivity, tightness or flaking can occur. Visible peeling is not guaranteed and does not measure how well a treatment has worked.
- Downtime varies with the peel and your skin. Infection, scarring and pigment changes are possible; suitability and risks are discussed individually.
Aftercare
- Use the recommended cleanser and moisturiser or other aftercare products as directed.
- Do not pick, peel or scrub loose skin. Avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids and additional skin treatments until cleared.
- Protect the area from sun exposure. Follow your instructions for restarting sunscreen, makeup, exercise, swimming and heat exposure.
- Do not use a general online recovery timetable in place of the instructions for your particular peel.
When to contact us
- Contact the clinic for worsening burning, pain, swelling, unexpected blisters or prolonged irritation. Seek medical assessment for spreading redness, pus or fever.
