Before booking

Contraindications & suitability.

This screening guide identifies common reasons to defer or seek assessment. It is not an exhaustive list for every product, device or health condition.

Do not proceed until assessed

  • Active infection, cold sores, inflamed acne, cuts or sunburn in the proposed area.
  • A lesion or changing skin mark that needs medical assessment before treatment.
  • Known allergy to a proposed product or device material until a suitable alternative is confirmed.

Tell Nicolle before booking

  • Bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medicines.
  • Diabetes, impaired healing, immune suppression, cancer treatment or radiotherapy.
  • Keloid tendency, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo or other significant skin conditions.
  • Current or recent isotretinoin, retinoids, steroids or recent skin procedures.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding; device instructions and individual suitability must be reviewed.
  • Previous pigment changes or a skin type needing additional pigmentation-risk assessment.

Do not stop prescribed medicines to make yourself eligible for treatment. Medical clearance may be required.

Preparing for your appointment

  • Follow the skincare preparation plan provided by Nicolle. Confirm when to pause non-prescription retinol, exfoliating acids or scrubs; timing depends on your skin and treatment plan.
  • Protect your skin from the sun and avoid tanning before treatment.
  • Arrive without makeup on the treatment area where possible. Your skin will be cleansed and prepared in the clinic.
  • Allow the appointment time listed for your chosen area, plus any booked add-on. Plan around your aftercare instructions and any upcoming events.

Optional numbing cream

If you would prefer to use numbing cream, EMLA can be purchased from a pharmacy and applied before your skin needling appointment when suitable. Check with Nicolle and your pharmacist first to confirm the treatment area, amount and application time, then follow the pack directions.

Avoid contact with the eyes and do not apply to broken or irritated skin. Do not combine numbing products unless directed by your treating clinician. Bring the labelled tube to your appointment.

What happens during treatment

  • We review your skin, goals and history, explain the proposed treatment and obtain consent.
  • The treatment area is prepared and the needling device is passed over the assessed skin. Tell Nicolle if you feel uncomfortable.
  • Your appointment includes discussion of recovery, aftercare and possible follow-up. Appointment length includes assessment and preparation.
  • Your appointment includes a post-treatment mask. Optional add-ons are discussed and agreed separately.

What to expect afterwards

  • Redness or darker discolouration, tenderness, warmth and mild swelling can occur. Recovery may take several days, sometimes up to a week.
  • Infection, scarring and lasting pigment changes are possible. Your individual risks are discussed before treatment.

Aftercare

  • Follow your written cleansing and skincare instructions. Use the recommended gentle aftercare products; avoid scrubs and picking.
  • Wait at least 24 hours before makeup, and longer if advised or your skin has not recovered.
  • Ask when to restart retinoids, exfoliating acids, exercise and heat exposure. Protect healing skin from the sun and follow advice on when to resume sunscreen.

When to contact us

  • Contact the clinic promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, blistering or symptoms that worsen instead of settling. Seek medical assessment for suspected infection or fever.

Planning your appointments

  • Choose a 60-minute face appointment, 75 minutes for face & neck, or 90 minutes for face, neck & décolletage. The booked time includes assessment and preparation; it is not continuous needling time.
  • The number and spacing of appointments depend on your skin, recovery and goals. A series or maintenance plan is discussed individually.
  • Contact the clinic before combining needling with another procedure or restarting active skincare. Your skin must be assessed as suitable before further treatment.
